TEARS AND REGRETS
The 2013 has come to an end for the last two remaining representatives of the St-Laurent Football Association at the next-to-last stage. Both atoms and mosquitos, who were competing to get an invite to the Provincial Finals Big Dance to be held next weekend, will only be able to attend from the stands. Coming into the games, there were legitimate reasons to be optimisitic, but sometimes it is not meant to be...
The youngest Spartans, who were visiting the Grizzilis in Boucherville, the day started in the most encouraging fashion. An early rushing TD and a steel defence, which should even have been credited with a score of its own (a pick returned all the way, only to be called back on a borderline infraction). With a 6-0 scoreline, the odds looked good at half-time. But the home team possessed resources and a deep bench which allowed it to make up the difference in the second half. They scored three times late in the game and put the decision beyond the Spartans reach (final score 24-6). For Steven Baranoff and his troops, it was a sad end for a plucky team that probably deserved a little more. For the mosquito team, the pill is even more bitter to swallow. Steve Batsos’ team were host to St-Bruno for a clash of the titans. The Barons, like the Spartans, had just been crowned league champions after also taking the Metropolitan League by a storm (10-0 in regular season, 2-0 in league playoffs). This meant that this Provincial semi-final was going to plunge someone into despair, and from early on, it appeared that St-Laurent had grabbed the short end of the stick. St-Bruno, which appeared a little fresher and a little deeper, could also take advantage of inclement weather and playing conditions that favour them over the usually lighter and more mobile St-Laurent outfit. Back-to-back scoring drives at the onset of the game, and St-Bruno was up 16-0 even before the Spartans got in gear. This advantage, they never relinquished the rest of the way and were able to sustain any attempt from the Spartans. A final score of 22-6 will remain close enough to feed regrets for what might have been. But the tears will dry soon and will be replaced by the legitimate pride borne out of the accomplishment from having completed a remarkable and memorable season as league champions. 2013 is now over. LARMES ET REGRETS
La saison 2013 s’est achevée pour les deux derniers représentants de l’association de St-Laurent à l’avant-dernière étapes. Les atomes et les moustiques qui étaient en compétition pour une invitation au grand bal des finales provinciales le weekend prochain ne pourront assister aux matches que des gradins. Et pourtant, les raisons d’espérer était là, mais le sort en decidé autrement. Pour les plus jeunes des Spartans qui était en visite à Boucherville, la journée de samedi a commencé de façon encourageante. Un TD tôt dans le match et une defense de fer qui aurait du être crédité d’un majeur sur un retour d’interception, pour n’être rappelé que pour une infraction peu évidente. A 6-0 à la pause, les présages était bon. Mais les Grizzlis avaient des ressources et un banc bien mieux fourni et ont remonté la pente en seconde période marquant à 3 reprises tard dans le match (score final 24-6). Pour Steven Baranoff et sa troupe ce fut une fin un peu triste pour une petite équipe qui aurait pu pretendre à peu plus. Pour les moustiques, ce fut une dur désillusion. La bande de Steve Batsos recevait St-Bruno, qui comme les Spartans avaient été sacré champions de la Ligue Métropolitaine suivant une saison parfaite (10-0 en saison, et 2-0 en playoffs de ligue). Cette demi-finale provinciale allait faire des malheureux, et le sort décida de prendre fait et cause pour les Barons. St-Bruno, profita d’une belle fraicheur physique et d’un alignement un peu mieux founi. De plus Les conditions météo ne furent pas du côté des Spartans, la pluie et la boue rendant les conditions plus propice au jeu des visiteurs qu’à celui rapide et leger de St-Laurent. Les Barons prirent un avantage de 16-0 au premier quart et ne lacheront plus la mise du match. Au final, une marque de 22-06 restera suffisamment proche pour nourrir tous les regrets d’une saison qui aurait pu finir en triomphe. Mais les larmes secheront vite pour donner place à ue fièreté legitime d’avoir accompli une saison de champion, à la fois remarquable et mémorable. 2013 est fini. Vivement 2014… |
