C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S! The St-Laurent midget program completed its revival under the care of head coach James Buteau this Friday. Three seasons ago, at the time of his return to the staff of club of his childhood, coach James, as he is called by his players, took the role of assistant in a team that had not fared well in the Wilbert Scott division. In a year, the team was propelled to a perfect 10-0 record, a division title and an invite to participate in the Britton Bowl Provincial championship playoffs. More vital in Buteau's eye, a qualification to move up to the more prestigious Bruno Heppell division in 2011.  After taking over the role of head coach after the departure of Steeve Morrisseau, Buteau secured another playoffs birth by finishing in the top 7 of the division and took the team to the final. Now in his second year as commander-in-chief at the midget level one more step was accomplished. Securing the division title for the Heppell division. And that was done with a game to spare! The Spartans knew ahead of their ninth outing of the season that a win would secure the regular-season flag and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Last place St-Lazare were the guests who were trying to stop St-Laurent from their first top division title in decades. Despite a good effort on a very cold night at St-Laurent Park, the visitors fate seemed to have been sealed  before the 1st quarter was over. Quick successive scores following turnovers and an early injury to the starting QB seemed to deflate the courageous Stallions. The scoring continued the rest of the game to settle at 42-0. A score that may have been a little harsh on the visitors, especially since St-Laurent, themselves hit by a rash of injuries (Umar Temoor, Tyonn Walker and Dylan Seinet out before or early in the game), was trying to avoid anymore casualties which could be costly later in postseason, which was reflected on the style of play.  St-Laurent which finished the game without losing anymore players, was presented with the QMFL regular season champions trophy which will remain on display in the chalet showcase until the end of the season. But while the joy was palpable in the sense of accomplishment from the players and staff, everyone was careful not to touch the piece of silverware. Everyone's eye is on the other other one, the one that eluded them last season and which will be up for grabs on Nov 11 at St-Leonard stadium. Before we get there, we'll have to play the last game of the regular season next sat at Laval (8.00pm kickoff). Then put it all on the line two weeks in a row at St-Laurent Park. C.H.A.M.P.I.O.N.S! Le programme midget a complété son retour sur la scene des grands sous la coupe de l'entraineur James Buteau ce vendredi. Il y a juste trois saisons, quand coach Buteau est revenu au sein du club de son enfance en tant qu'assistant, le programme midget ne surnageait que difficillement dans la division Wilbert Scott. Mais l'espace d'une saison, l'équipe s'ést transformée et termina avec une saison parfaite (10-0), un titre de division et une inviation à participer aux playoffs provinciaux du Britton Bowl. Encore plus important dans l'esprit de Buteau, l'équipe se qualifiait pour participer l'année suivante dans la plus prestigieuse division Bruno Heppell. Après avoir reprit le flambeau d'entraineur-chef en 2011, suite au départ de Steeve Morrisseau, Buteau amena de nouveau son équipe à une place dans les provinciaux en finissant dans les 7 premières places de la division et finira avec la medaille d'argent. Aujourd'hui, dans sa 2e année en tant que commandant-en-chef un nouveau pas a été franchi: s'assurer du titre de champion de la division Heppell. Et avec encore un match en main! L'équipe savait qu'une victoire dans leur neuvieme sortie de la saison lui guarantirait les honneurs de la saison régulière et d'être l'hôte de ces matches de playoffs. C'est à St-Lazare, dernier du classement, à qui revenait la lourde tâche de stopper St-Laurent. Malgrès un bon effort dans une nuit très fraiche au parc St-Laurent, le destin des visiteurs a semblé etre scellé très tôt dans la partie. Les Spartans ont profité de deux erreurs defensives sur des possessions successives pour marquer deux fois rapidement. Le QB  partant des Stallions se blessa aussi rapidement laissant peu de doute sur l'issue de la rancontre. La marque finale, après que St-Laurent ait pu marquer de façon regulière durant le match se finira à 42-0. Le score est un peu sévère pour les visiteur ui ont livrée de façon courrageuse. D'autant que les Spartans, touchés par une vague  de blessures (Umar Temoor, Tyonn Walker et Dylan Seinet se sont portés sur la liste de blessé avant ou tôt dans le match), ont dû alterer leur jeu quelque peu. St-Laurent qui finira sans perdre d'autre joueur, reçu le trophée de division, qui sera en exposition dans la vitrine du chalet jusqu'à la fin de la saison. Mais alors que la joie de recevoir une telle récompense était palpable, tous, parmi les joueurs et entraineurs, se sont empressés de ne pas toucher la pièce. Tous le monde à les yeux rivés sur l'autre trophée, celui qui sera donné le 11 novembre au stade de St-Leonard. Avant d'y arriver, il faudra d'abord finir la saison regulière la semaine prochaine à Laval (coup d'envoi à 8.00pm). Et ensuite remettre tout en jeu pour deux semaines de playoffs à St-Laurent. HOME FIELD The St-Laurent bantam program had a lot at stake on Saturday night. A win was going to be a huge morale boost before postseason, as well as securing a bye in the quarter final and home-field for the semis. Because the guests were the Bulldogs, a team slightly below them in the standings, the message was going to be important as to the capacity to handle teams competing in the same postseason tournament. The players responded with a convincing defensive performance in 13-0 win. Offensively the Spartans never got going on a really heavy field, and could not sustain any drive for most of the game. The Bulldogs actually proved to be more dangerous and found themselves a couple of times inside the Spartans Red zone.  It took another Special Team's play to get the scoring going for the Spartans. The inevitable Sheldon Coppin again critically returned a kick all-the-way late in the third to open-up the Orange-and-Blacks' account. The one score remained tight until the Spartans last drive with under two minutes left. A short power run from Shemar Ritchie settled the game once and for all. The Spartans now will close the regular season next Saturday, when they travel to Repentigny and take on the Rhinos, a team right above them in the standing. They will be off the following week before playing their QBFL Cup Semis on November 3rd or 4th at St-Laurent Park. Opening of the score l'ouverture du score (Sheldon Coppin)

A DOMICILE L'équipe bantam de St-Laurent jouait gros ce samedi soir face à Sherbrooke. Une victoire était necessaire non seulement pour se refaire le morale après 4 défaites consécutives, mais aussi à la clef, il y avait une qualification direct pour les 1/2 finales la coupe de la QBFL sans passer par les 1/4, et en cadeau le droit de recevoir ce match. De plus, comme les hôtes étaient les Bulldogs, une équipe juste en dessous au classement, le message était important quant à la capacité de la formation d'être compétitif face à une équipe qui se retrouve dans le même tournoi post-saison. Le pari fut reussi avec une belle performance défensive et une victoire de 13-0. Offensivement, le Spartans ne se sont jamais vraiment mis en route. Sur un terrain très lourd, se sont même les visiteurs qui se sont montré les plus dangereux en pemettrant à deux reprises loin dans le territoire des Spartans. Comme lors de leur précédentes vitoire, c'est un jeu des unités spéciales qui mettrons enfin l'équipe laurentienne sur les rails. L'inévitable Sheldon Coppin retourna de nouveau un coup-de-pied pour un TD tard en 3e. Le score restera serré jusqu'à la dernière possession des Spartans avec moins de deux minutes à jouer. Un courte course de Shemar Ritchie scella définitivement l'issue du match. Les Spartans refermeront la saison régulière 2012 samedi prochain en se déplaçant à Repentigny pour y affronter les Rhinos. l'équipe qui les précède juste au classement. La semaine suivante sera donc de repos avant une demi-finale de la coupe de la QBFL le weekend du 3-4 novembre au parc St-Laurent. ATOM SAVE SOME PRIDE FOR THE SPARTANS If  this week's game was more about getting ready for postseason for the peewees and atoms, the mosquitoes had a little more at stake. While the name of their opponents in round #1 has been set for a couple of weeks (St-Lazare), the time and place of the encounter was still up for grabs. A win meant that the Spartans would host the game, an advantage sometimes crucial in the colder, rainier days of late October/early November. Unfortunately, Steve Batsos' troops could not take advantage of an early lead which was kept until the half, and let Western take the initiative for good in the third quater. The Mosquito will finish their season next Saturday at Lakeshore. The Peewee, already missing All Star FB Olivier Poitras through injury for the rest of the year, was struck by another big loss for the day as TB/CB Latrell Pierre was unavailable to play either. The losses seemed too great for the team to sustain as they allowed 20 second half points  after staying competitive in the first. The Atom closed their 2012 regular season with a 6-6 tie against the fourth-place Silver Patriots. The game ended with a magnificent goal-line stand to preserve the point and keep a bit pride on an otherwise disappointing day.

LES ATOMES  SAUVE L'HONNEUR Si les matches de la semaine pour les peewees et les atomes faisaient office de préparation pour les playoffs, pour les moustiques en revanche il y avait un peu plus en jeu. Le nom des adversaires du premier tour étant déjà connus (St-Lazare), il restait quand même à décider du lieu et de l'heure  de la rencontre. Une victoire ouvrait la porte au Spartans d'être l'hôte du match, un avantage parfois crucial lors des jours plus frais et mouillés de la fin-octobre/debut-novembre. Malheuresement, les troupes de Steve Batsos ne purent capitaliser l'avantage au score qu'il avait à la mi-temps. Les Patriots sont revenus forts au retour de la pause et ont imposé leur rythme  leur permettant de rentrer à l'Ile Perrot victorieux. Le programme moustique finiara sa saison réguliere 2012 en déplacement à Lakeshore samedi prochain. L'équipe peewee, déjà lourdement handicapée par l'absence du joueur All-Star Elite Olivier Poitras (blessure au genou), reçu une autre nouvelle desastreuse avec le retrait pour le match du TB/CB Latrell Pierre. Cette perte s'est ressentie en fin de match quand les Patriots marquèrent 20 points alors que la partie était compétitive jusque là. La formation atome mis fin à sa saison réguliere en sauvant un match nul 6-6. Le rencontre s'est terminée avec une série défensive sur la ligne de buts pour perserver le point et garder un peu de fièreté à cette journée autrement plutôt décevante.

END IN STYLE The Tyke program finished its 2012 season by hosting a mini Jamboree at St-Laurent Park. They played very competitively against both the North Shore Jr. Lions and the Western Blue Patriots, two teams far more experienced than  St-Laurent.  The Littlest Spartans showed character and were able to complete advanced plays. They match also their opponents offensively and defensively, scoring a few times and making good stops. The signs are promising for both the Tykes and the Atoms in 2013.

UNE BELLE FIN Le programme des titans s'est achevé pour la saison 2012 sur un mini Jamboree au parc St-Laurent. Les Spartans se sont acquittés très honorablement dans leur rencontre face à North Shore et à western, deux équipes pourtant plus expérimentées. Les plus jeunes laurentiens ont montré beaucoup de caractère et ont été capable de complété des jeux de niveau plutôt avancé. Ils généralement fait jeu égale offensivement et defensivement, marquant et arrêtant l'attaque adverse à plusieurs reprises. De bons signes pour les titans et les atomes en 2013.

BACK TO A CRUISING MODE  Because of last season's unexpected playoffs run to the Provincial final, the expectation are high this season that the team will do as well or better. But coach James Buteau is not letting himself lulled into indulgence during the current regular season ride. As a seasoned skipper, part of staff that won medals at all levels, he knows that no-one will remember the season if the playoffs are not a success themselves.  With that in mind, and on the back of the team's poorest outing of 2012 last weekend, the goal all week long was to get back to that steady football that have made the midget program so reliable. The trip to fourth-place Boucherville provided a great opportunity in which the team rose to the challenge. A convincing, but not overbearing, win on the back of a solid performance showed that the focus is back in the Spartans camp. The offence was provided by a precise passing game, a mix of short completions to WR Peter Skoulos, and home runs to the extremely reliable Michael Remy (1 TD). The QB Adam Sinigra ran a score himself and kicked a couple of FG to complete the scoring. The Orange Crush defence, that was put under immense pressure in the previous match against North Shore, held tightly and only conceded a late score. The goaline stand to end the game, is testimony that the determination is there even when the game is already won. That kind of focus will be required starting on the weekend of Oct 26, when St-Laurent will be hosting the 1st round of the playoffs. It seems that the coaching staff has found the right words to remotivate the team. Next game will be also critical, when the 1st place Spartans will be hosting the last place St-Lazare Stallions at St-Laurent Park on Friday at 8.00pm. A win will seal the regular-season flag and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. ORANGE CRUSH DEFENSE: Goal Line Stand to end the game

DE RETOUR VERS L'ALTITUDE DE CROISIERE Du fait de la performance inespérée de l'an passé au playoffs du championnat provincial, le niveau d'attentes est élevé, et on s'attend à un resultat équivalent ou meilleur encore. Mais l'entraineur de l'équipe, James Buteau ne se laissent pas endormir par les bons résultats de la saison. Le leader chevroné qu'il est (ayant gagné des medailles à tous les niveaux), il ne sait que trop bien que personne ne souviendra de cette année, s'il n'y a pas de succès post-saison. Avec ça en tête, et suite à la moins impressionnante des sorties de la formation en 2012 le weekend dernier, le but pour la semaine était de revenir à ce jeu fiable qui a rendu le program midget si efficace. Le déplacement à boucherville, qui trônait à la 4e place, donnait un parfait décor à ce défi. Et les Spartans ont encore repondu présents. Une victoire confortable, sans être arrogante, a montrée que les joueurs pouvaient se remobiliser et reprendre le bus en marche. Offensivement, la performance peut etre décrit comme étant présice et controllée. Un jeu de passe qui est un mélange dosé entre de courtes passes au WR Peter Skoulos et d'invicisives longue connection avec l'infatiguable Michael Remy (1 TD). Le QB Adam Sinigra marquera lui-même sur une courte course et une pair de FG pour compléter le score. La defense, qui avait été mal-menée la semaine passée par North Shore, a tenu solidement ne concedant qu'un score et prouvera sa détermination en se permettant le luxe de conclure le match en arretant les Grizzlis sur la ligne des buts, alors que la partie était déjà gagnée. Se type de volontarisme sera nécessaire pour les playoffs qui débuterons à St-Laurent le weekend du 26 Oct. Le staff semble avoir les mots justes pour remotiver les torupes. Le prochain match aura lieur vendredi prochain à St-Laurent (8.00pm) avec la venue de St-Lazare ,l'équipe de queue de tableau. une victoire assurera les Spartans du titre de saison réguliere et de l'avantage d'accueuilir les matches de post-saison. DESTINATION SET The QBFL second division playoffs format is an interesting one, as it is the one division of the three at bantam level that allows to participate in any one of three AAA playoffs tournament. The loss this weekend to St-Bruno just about sealed the fate of the St-Laurent program, which will now be competing for the QBFL cup. A 5-team postseason championship, with the final being played on championship weekend at St-Leonard. A win was imperative in order to keep any chance of staying in course for the President's Cup berth, but too many mistakes early in the game prevented the bantam Spartans to be competitive at anytime during the contest. Offensively, the Spartans appeared to be threatening late in the second, with a long score by Sheldon Coppin and a TD pass from QB Dennis Karabatsos to WR Alvin Avendano. But the damage had already been done, and St-Laurent will now focus in trying to get home field advantage by beating the last-place Sherbrooke Bulldogs who are visiting t-Laurent Park Friday night at 8.00pm. DESTINATION FIXÉE Les possibilités de playoffs pour les  équipes évoluants dans la deuxieme division de la QBFL sont interessantes car c'est dans cette division uniquement que, selon son classement final, une formation peut terminer dans l'un des trois tournois AAA . La défaite de St-Laurent face à St-Bruno le weekend dernier a scellé le destin des Spartans, qui maintenant savent qu'il disputeront la coupe QBFL, dont le titre se joue à St-Leonard lors du grand weekend des finales. Une victoire était impérative pour garder une chance de rester dans la course aux places pour la coupe du président. Mais de trop nombreuses erreurs tôt dans le match empecherent St-Laurent d'être dans le match. Offensivement, les Spartans ont semblé mettre un peu de pression avec deux scores en fin de deuxieme quart (un long TD de Sheldon Coppin et une passe du QB Dennis Karabatsos au WR Alvin Avendano. SWEPT AWAY AT WESTWOOD All three youth division St-Laurent teams came home empty from their Thanksgiving trip to Westwood Park in St-Lazare. If both atom and peewee programs had a tall order, as they played teams higher in the standings, the mosquito program on the other hand was playing the team they battle in the standings for second spot. A second place finish earns home field in the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not keep pace with the Stallions running game and fell to an early deficit they could never gap. The killer blow coming when the Orange & Blacks scored late in the second on a run by QB Tristan Pelletier to narrow the deficit, only to  gave up a TD on the kickoff return. This was the sign that it wasn't meant to be on that day.  For the peewee, it was the same old story, as they took the lead early with two quick 1st half TD by Latrell Pierre and Anthony Moustache.  But the defense could not the advantage very long and was overmatched for most of the second half.  The Atom suffered a rare shutout against the Silver Stallions. They travelled with the regulation minimum of 12 players, which made it hard to keep up physically with a well prepared team. Next weekend, Western is visiting St-Laurent Park on Saturday at 5.00pm for the Peewee and on Sunday at 11.00am and 1.30pm for the Atom and Mosquito respectively.

BALAYÉS A WESTWOOD Les trois équipes des divisions jeunes des Spartans sont rentrés les mains vides de leur periple au parc Wetwood de St-Lazare. Si la nouvelle n'est pas necessairement surprenante pour les atomes et peewee qui jouaient des équipes placées plus au classement, le programme moustique en revanche se confrontait à l'équipe avec laquelle elle se dispute la 2e place au classement. Cette 2e position est cruciale car elle permet de jouer son premier tour des playoffs à domicile. Malheureusement, les spartans se sont mis dans une position délicate d'entrée et ne purent jamais plus garder le cadence des Stallions. la moment le plus difficile venant quand les orange-et-noirs marquerent par l'intermédiaire d'une course du QB Tristan Pelletier, malheureusement pour laisser filer un TD dans l'autre sens sur le botté de remise en jeu. C'était le signe clair que ce n'était pas leur jour. Pour les peewee, l'histoire se répète de semaine en semaine, alors qu'ils prennent la tête en début de match grâce à deux TD de L'atrell Pierre et d'Anthony Moustache. Mais la défense n'était pas en position de profiter de l'avantage et s'est vite retrouvée dans une situation où elle fut totallement dominée. Le program atome à  été victime d'un rare blanchissage. Seul le minimum règlementaire de 12 joueurs avaient fait le déplacement, ce qui rendait la mission presque impossible physiquement face à une équipe aussi bien préparée. Le weekend prochain, Les Patriots visit le parc St-Laurent, Ce sera Samedi à 5.00opm pour les peewees et dimanche à11.00am et 1.30pm pour les atomes et moustiques respectivement.

 NORTH SHORE Jr LIONS 

BUILDING BLOCKS Rome wasn't not built in one day, and neither are the St-Laurent Spartans. Even after almost 60 years of existence, the association still needs time to develop a program. This season the Tyke program were launch in a formal way, and this past weekend, the benefits clearly started to show. The youngest Spartans, coached on the field by Midget players Ossirus Ip, Harrison Rahajason and Mosquito player Jahlyd Little were taking part in a Tyke contest with the Western Patriots and the North Shore Jr. Lions. Though clearly the smallest team in numbers and the least experienced, the players showed a lot of character and clearly held their own in a competitive environment. Though scores are not kept and no standings are established, it can be noted that St-Laurent was even more at ease this weekend than previous one and dominated some portions of the contests. All players (aged 4-7) had a chance to participate in both offensive and defensive portion of the game and were a tribute to the colours they were wearing for their performance and their enthusiasm. And more importantly they all seemed to have a lot of fun playing football.

Cette saison, le programme titan a été lancé formellement et le weekend passé les premiers fruits semblent murir. Les tout-petits Spartans, entrainés sur le terrain par les joueurs midget Ossirus Ip et Harrison Rahajason ainsi que du joueur moustique Jahlyd Little, prenaient part à un match triangulaire les opposant à Western et North Shore. Même si l'équipe était clairement la plus petite en nombre et la moins experimentée, les joueurs ont su se montrer combatifs dans un environment compétitif. Bien que les scores ne soient pas tenu et qu'il n\y ait pas d'etablissement de classement , il était clair que St-Laurent etait bienplus à son aise ce weekend que le précédent et que l'équipe domina certaines parties des débats. Les joueurs (agés de 4-7 ans) ont tous eu la chance de participer à la portion offensive et défensive du jeu et ont fait honneur à leurs couleurs, tant pour la performance que l'entousiasme.  Mais plus important encore, ils se sont tous amusés à jouer au football.
