Atom HC

The Atom Program Gets a New Chief The Last team in the Spartans family that had not yet started its indoor program will do so this week. The Atom program  (7-9 y-o) was anxiously awaiting the  appointment of a new head coach. Steven Baranoff, who was assistant at the level last season was given the nod to take over departing Eric Girard's role. Eric had spearheaded the revival of the program in 2008, and had since been the only head coach. The staff, outside of the new HC, has a few returning members from 2012 and should expand by a member of two by the time the season starts. Practice will start this week indoor at LaurenHill  Jr. Campus on Thursdays 6-8pm.  THE SPARTANS FAMILY WISHES HIM A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL TENURE WITH US!

Arrivée du nouveau chef pour le programme atome La dernière équipe de la famille des Spartans à debuter son programme intérieur, pourra le faire dès cette semaine. L'équipe atome (7-9 ans) attendait avec impatience la nomination d'un nouvel entraineur-chef, c'est chose faite: Steven Baranoff, qui était assistant à ce niveau l'année passée a été approuvé comme celui qui remplacera Eric Girard, qui prend une pause de son rôle dans le football. Ce dernier à été le precurseur de la regénération du programme en 2008, et avait été jusqu'à present sont seul leader. Le staff, en dehors de son nouveau chef, sera composé de membres l'édition 2012 et devrait s'étoffer d'un ou deux membres d'ici le début de saison régulière. Executive 2013

AGM 2013 Election The 2013 AGM was held 23 Feb 2013 at the Centre des Loisirs. A new executive was elected, comprising of a mix of experienced returning members as well as motivated new ones. All positions were filled including that of Bantam director (Guy Poitras) which had been left vacant all of last season. The acting president (MJ Comtois) and VP (Kelly Dimitropoulos) from 2012 were elected to permanent position in recognizance of the great work they provided under demanding circumstances. Best wishes of success to luck to all!

Élection à AGA 2013 L'AGA AGM s'est tenue le 23 fev 2013 au Centre des Loisirs. Un nouveau comité directeur a été élu. Celui-ci comprend un mélange de membres experimentés, ainsi que de nouveaux visages motivés à la tâche. Toutes les positions ont été comblés, y compris la charge de directeur bantam  (Guy Poitras) qui avait été laissée vacante en 2012. La présidente   (MJ Comtois) et la vice-presidente (Kelly Dimitropoulos) qui occupaient la fonction par interim ont été elues de façon permanente en reconnaissance de l'excellent travail fourni dans des conditions difficiles et contraignante. QMFL Awards/Trophées

QMFL AWARDS 2012 The QMFL handed its 2012 awards and St-Laurent was well represented in the winner's category. The team received two All-Star nomination, three player of the year awards and a staff of the year award for an amazing THIRD YEAR IN A ROW. This is a great achievement for outgoing head coach and former Spartan player James Buteau, whose commitment and enthusiasm will be sorely missed. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! INVITED AT THE BIG O Only a couple of weeks after having its field selected for renovations as part of cross-Canada 100th Grey Cup festivities, the Spartans have been invited  to play a small part in the East final organization, as the community team in charge of distributing the game programs to the 50,000 fans attending the game. Though the score may not have gone the home team way, most in the party will keep a good memory of a special day at the stadium.

NVITE AU STADE OLYPIQUE A peine quelques semaines après avoir eu le terrain du parc St-Laurent sélectionné parmis des dizaines d'autres pour des rénovations dans le  cadre  trans-canadien des festivités de la 100e coupe Grey, les Spartans ont reçus une invitation pour jouer une part modeste dans l'organisation de la finale de l'est de la ligue canadienne. L'équipe fut séléctionné comme l'équipe communautaire locale en charge de la distribution des programmes de match au quelques 50 000 spectateur de la rencontre. Bien que le score final ne soit pas allé dans le sens de l'équipe locale, la plupart de ceux qui ont participé garderont de bons souvenirs de cette journée spéciale au stade.

CELEBRATION TIME! Head Coach Barry Castello is making a habit of bringing home the trophy with the league name on it on his rookie season at a new level. He took over the peewee AAA program in 2007 and promptly took home the MRFL Cup beating out Greenfield Park. In 2012, in his first year at the helm of the bantam team, he is bringing home the QBFL Cup trophy to St-Laurent Park. His team had to come back from an early 3-0 deficit against a tenacious and much improved Joliette team to earned a second piece of silverware for the association this season, the midgets having won their regular-season title earlier. The two teams had met in the very first encounter of the season in St-Laurent, a contest easily won by the Spartans 33-6. This time, the game was anything but comfortable, as both defensive unit were dominant making the possibility of any breakout play a remote possibility. The Spartans were particularly good in the pass protection department, producing three interceptions during the contest (Jabez Willy and Bandon Dass). As it was the case a few time this year for St-Laurent, the break came from special team, on a punt return. The irrepressible Sheldon Coppin scooped up a ball in Spartans territory and returned it the length of the field for a score that put St-Laurent on top never to look back. Coppin scored again later on a  25yrd-run, while the rest of the scoring was produced by one the most effective backs in post-season Victor Leblanc. It was time for celebration for the players, staff and fans that had made the short journey to St-Leonard. These are the first honours the bantam program has won since a 3rd division regular season crown in 2005. So long ago that  none of the players on the team was playing football then. L'HEURE EST A LA FETE! Le coach Barry Castello semble prendre l'habitude de remener au club un trophée avec le nom de ligue dans première saison à tête d'un nouveau niveau. Quand il prit le contrôle de l'équipe peewee AAA en 2007, il remporta la coupe MRFL en battant Greenfield Park. En 2012, pour son coup d'essai avec le niveau bantam, il rentre avec la coupe QBFL au parc St-Laurent. Son équipe a su revenir d'un déficit de début de match de 3-0 face à une tenace équipe de Joliette, qui s'est grandement amélioré depuis le début de saison. Ce trophée est le second pour l'association en 2012, après le celui remporté par les midgets pour le succès en saison régulière. Les s'étaient rencontrées en tout début de saison à St-Lauremt, un match remporté plutôt facilement par les locaux 33-6. Cette fois-ci, la rencontre fut tout sauf aisée pour les spartans. Les deux unités défensives dominèrent les débats, et rendirent les possiblités de long jeux peux problables. Du côté de St-Laurent la protectyion aérienne était particulièrement productive, réalisant 3 interceptions durant le match  (Jabez Willy et Bandon Dass).. Comme ce fut le cas à plusieurs occasions cette année pour St-Laurent, la brèche fut ouverte par l'inévitable Sheldon Coppin, l'un des tout meilleur à retourner des coup-de-pieds dans la QBFL. Sur un long dégagement, Coppin a son habiltude ramassa la balle avec aisance dans le camp des Spartans et la retourna sur toute la longeur du terrain, donnant à St-Laurent un avantage qui ne sera jamais rendu. Coppin marquera aussi en 4e alors que le reste du score sera complété par l'un des courreurs les plus productifs de l'équipe durant cette fin de saison Victor Leblanc. L'heure était maintenant à la célébration pour les joueurs, le staff et les fans qui avaient fait le court déplacement à St-Leonard. Ce sont les premiers honneurs remportés par le programme bantam depuis le trophée de division en 2005 (saison-régulière 3e division). Il y a tellement longtemps qu'aucun des joueurs de l'équipe ne jouaient même au football. Il ne reste qu'a espèrer que l'on attendra pas un autre sept ans avant que la prochaine bannière ne soient ramenée à la maison! TOO STRONG TO CONTEND The Spartans peewee AAA program of Head Coach Jimmy Skoulos closed its season with a disappointing loss to their former league-mate, the St-Leonard Cougars. The disappointment does not come from the loss, which was at the hands of a team that was physically too strong for the Spartans to beat. It comes more at the final score which does not reflect the hard work from the team especially on the defensive side of the ball. It does not show most of the adjustments operated for the game actually worked quite well and that the teams were probably a bit closer than the point difference may suggest.  But St-Leonard had a weapon that removed most of the relevance of the rest of the game. All Star RB Cedric Deusma, a power runner that settled St-Leonard's two previous playoffs rounds against Sherbrooke and Sun Youth, was just as unstoppable at St-Laurent park and ran the length of the field 6 times.  Six breakaway plays that hide the fact that the Spartans produced sacks, interceptions, forced fumbles and made a few impressive stops to complement a steady offensive production that saw RB Anthony Moustache and TE Latrell Pierre score impressive TD's. The staff can now reflect on the season and get ready for the 2013. The batch of first year players on board this season suggests that the team should have a bit of talent and can dream of maybe advancing a bit more in postseason. We'll see in a year's time! TROP GROS, TROP FORTS  Le programme peewee AAA des Spartans, coacher par Jimmy Skoulos, a refermé sa saison sur une défaite plutôt décevante face à leurs ancients collegue de ligue de St-Léonard. La déception ne vient pas de la défaite elle-même, qui vient aux mains d'une formation surement trop bien équipée physiquement pour que St-Laurent ne puisse les battre.  Celle-ci vient plutôt du fait que le score final ne reflète pas vraimement le travail fait par l'équipe surtout côté defensif du ballon. Les ajustements fais en prévision de la rencontre ont plutôt bien marchés et les deux équipes sont vraisemblement plus proches que la difference de point ne veut le suggérer. Toutefois, les Cougars sont venus avec une arme qui laissa le reste des débats sans beaucoup de pertinence. Le RB all-star Cedric Deusma, un porteur de ballon extremement puissant, et qui fut l'artisant à lui seul pour St-Léonard des succès des deux tours de playoffs précédents (face à Sherbrooke et Sun Youth), fut aussi irrepressible à St-Laurent, et porta le ballon sur la longueur du terrain à six reprises contre les Spartans. En l'espace de  ces six long jeux fut capable de cacher que la defense Orange-et-Noir put forcer des sacks du QB, des interceptions, et pertes de ballon et stoppa des possessions en défense, et cela en complément d'une production offensive honorable où le RB Anthony Moustache et le TE Latrell Pierre donneront les points aux Spartans. Le Staff peut maintenant se mettre en mode d'inter-saison et se préparer pour 2013. Le nombre de joueur de 1e année dans l'équipe permet de suggérer que l'équipe devrait avoir une minimum de talent  et pourrait rêver à avancer un peu plus loin dans les playoffs. Rendez-vous dans un an!

COLD NIGHT, SWEET VICTORY! St-Laurent will be present on the big day at St-Leonard Stadium next week, participating at the championship day for midget and bantam categories. Because of the sterling season the Spartans midget achieved, most in the association expected them to be our focus at the event. Last week's heartbreak loss put an end to that dream. The bantam, a program that has been through its share of problems in the past couple of seasons, is peaking at the right time and is trying to have Spartans Nation get over the disappointment. They were invited to be part of the AAA QBFL Cup as the top seed in the field, and have held on to the honour by qualifying for the final that will be played next Saturday at 1.00pm. In bitter November cold, the Bantam was attempting to reach its second postseason final in 5 years. They were playing the team that surprised everyone in the quarter final, beating the Western Patriots at Pincourt. However, the game, which was started with a minute of silence in remembrance of Al Daly, a long-time former coach that passed away this week, did not appear to be heading towards an upset from Sherbrooke. St-Laurent, seemingly more comfortable with the elements, started as brightly as possible. Team scored in three quick successive possessions, and added a nice two-point conversion, giving a 22-0 cushion.  The first two TD's on power runs by RB  Jabez Willy, the last one came on a long running play by QB Dennis Karabatsos. This appeared to be the signal that the contest was over by the start of the second quarter. But credit has to be given to the visitors who battled back. Straightening their defense and connecting on offense, the Bulldogs battled back to 22-20 in the third making everyone wonder if they had yet another surprise in their back pocket. Fortunately for the Spartans, the 4th quarter went smoother and the Black-and-Orange regained the momentum and took the contest by a final 34-20. Next weekend, they will be closing their season on Saturday 10 Nov at Hebert Stadium in St-Leonard, part of the QMFL-QBFL finals. They will play the Joliette Pirates who stunned the Repentigny Rhinos in the other semis  15-12. Kickoff is at 1.00pm, and a admission will be charged to attend ($2-$5). The last time the Bantam program Bantam program reached a final, it the President's Cup Provincial final in 2008, when they lost to the Chateauguay Raiders. The association is behind Head Coach Barry Castello and his players and staff and hope this time they'll come home with a flag. In Memoriam: Coach Al Daly (1931-2012)

SOIRÉE GLACIALE, DOUCE VICTOIRE! St-Laurent sera présent pour le gros évènement la semaine prochaine à St-Leonard. L'association sera représentée pour la grande journée des finales des niveaux midget et bantam. La superlative saison régulière de l'équipe midget des Spartans autorisait beaucoup dans l'association à réver d'une nouvelle participation dans la confrontation reine du weekend. La cruelle défaite de dernière seconde le weekend dernier mis fin à ce rève. L'équipe  bantam, un programme qui a eu son lot de problème ces dernières saisons, relève la tête au meilleur moment pour remettre du baume au coeur de la nation Orange-et-Noir, et de lui faire oublier sa deception. Grâce à une troisième victoire d'affilée, ils sont maintenant invitée à prendre part à la finale de la coupe QBFL AAA qui aura lieu à 1.00pm samedi prochain. C'est dans une soirée glaciale de novembre que l'équipe tentait de se qualifier pourune seconde finale dans les 5 dernières saisons. Leurs adversaires étaient l'inattendue équipe de Sherbrooke, qui, à la surprise générale, s'est qualifiée en 1/4 de finale aux dépends de Western. Le match, qui débuta sur une minute de silence à la mémoire d'Al Daly, un ancien coach des Spartans qui nous a malheureusement quitté cette semaine, fut 100% Spartans dans ces premiers instants. Les locaux, qui semblaient bien plus comfortable avec les éléments, commencèrent de façon brillante prenant l'initative du match très rapidement et marquaient sur trois possession successives, montant rapidement le score jusqu'à 22-0.  Le RB  Jabez Willy sera l'auteur de deux TD alors que l'autre sera l'oeuvre du QB Dennis Karabatsos sur une longue course. Au départ du 2e quart, le match semblait être plié. Mais force est de reconnaitre la détermination des visiteurs, qui ne l'entendaient pas de cette oreille. Ayant mis de l'ordre dans leur defense et ajusté en phase offensive, les Bulldogs sont revenus dans le match le tableau en 3e montrait un score de 22-20 et un match en passe de basculer. Heureusement pour les Spartans, la matchine put repartir en 4e et les oranges-et-noirs reprirent le momentum et conclure le 4e quart en marquant deux fois amenant le score finale à un respectable 34-20. La semaine prochaine, l'équipe finira sa saison le 10 novembre au stade Hébert à St-Leonard, en prenant part au weekend de festivtés des finales QMFL-QBFL. Ils y affonreteront l'autre grande surprise de cette coupe QBFL, les pirates. L'équipe de Joliette prit le dessus sur son voisin de Repentigny et grand favoris de l'autre demie-finale sur un score de 12-15. Le coup d'envoi de la finale est à 1.00pm et des frais d''éntrée de $2-$5 seront chargés. La dernière fois que le programme bantam a atteint une finale, ce fut en 2008 dans la finale de la coupe du président. Chateauguay remporta la vicotire sur les Spartans. L'association est derrière le coach Barry Castello, ses joueurs et son staff pour lui souhaiter bonne vchance en esperant cette fois-ci ramener le titre.

 WMFL Challenge 

PREPARATION AND ENDING ON A HIGH Both mosquito and peewee programs were in action this sunday at St-Laurent Park as part of the WMFL challenge. For the peewee it was a tuneup game played against the Ile Bizard Vikings in preparation to their Alouettes Cup semis next weekend, and for the mosquito it was a way to end a good season on a positive note. Both teams responded well and were the respective winner of their category. The Peewee shutout the Vikings while producing 5 TD's on offence. New formations and plays were tested on either side of the ball to great effect, and the team has gained a bit of confidence ahead of a contest that will oppose them to a good St-Leonard Cougars team. The mosquito won their two matches on the afternoon against the Western Patriots and the Ile Bizard Vikings, and concludes its 2012 season on a high, and give coach Steve Batsos a very favorable overall win-loss record for his first season at the level. BONNE PREPARATION ET FIN SUR UNE BELLE NOTE Les programmes moustique et peewee étaient en action ce dimanche au parc St-Laurent pour le Challenge  WMFL. Pour les peewees, il s'agissait de prendre part à un match de mise-au-point  face à Ile-Bizard avant leur demie-finale de la coupe des Alouettes le weekedn prochain. Pour les moustiques, il s'agissait de jouer pour finir la saison sur une note positive. Les deux formations de St-Laurent ont répondu avec aplomb et sont sortis vainqueurs respectifs de leur catégorie. Le programme peewee, travailler la défense était primordiale et ils ont rempli leur contrat en blanchissant les Vikings, tout en marquant à 5 reprises en attaque. Les nouvelles formations et les nouveaux jeux des 2 côtés de la balle ont plutôt bien fonctionné, donnant un peu de confiance à l'équipe avant d'affronter  une redoutable équipe de St-Leonard. Les moustiques ont remporté leur deux parties face au Vikings et à Western et finissent 2012 sur une belle note. Cela donne aussi à l'entraineur Steve Batsos, un beau total de victoire  pour sa 1ere saison à ce niveau.
