BACK TO A CRUISING MODE  Because of last season's unexpected playoffs run to the Provincial final, the expectation are high this season that the team will do as well or better. But coach James Buteau is not letting himself lulled into indulgence during the current regular season ride. As a seasoned skipper, part of staff that won medals at all levels, he knows that no-one will remember the season if the playoffs are not a success themselves.  With that in mind, and on the back of the team's poorest outing of 2012 last weekend, the goal all week long was to get back to that steady football that have made the midget program so reliable. The trip to fourth-place Boucherville provided a great opportunity in which the team rose to the challenge. A convincing, but not overbearing, win on the back of a solid performance showed that the focus is back in the Spartans camp. The offence was provided by a precise passing game, a mix of short completions to WR Peter Skoulos, and home runs to the extremely reliable Michael Remy (1 TD). The QB Adam Sinigra ran a score himself and kicked a couple of FG to complete the scoring. The Orange Crush defence, that was put under immense pressure in the previous match against North Shore, held tightly and only conceded a late score. The goaline stand to end the game, is testimony that the determination is there even when the game is already won. That kind of focus will be required starting on the weekend of Oct 26, when St-Laurent will be hosting the 1st round of the playoffs. It seems that the coaching staff has found the right words to remotivate the team. Next game will be also critical, when the 1st place Spartans will be hosting the last place St-Lazare Stallions at St-Laurent Park on Friday at 8.00pm. A win will seal the regular-season flag and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. ORANGE CRUSH DEFENSE: Goal Line Stand to end the game

DE RETOUR VERS L'ALTITUDE DE CROISIERE Du fait de la performance inespérée de l'an passé au playoffs du championnat provincial, le niveau d'attentes est élevé, et on s'attend à un resultat équivalent ou meilleur encore. Mais l'entraineur de l'équipe, James Buteau ne se laissent pas endormir par les bons résultats de la saison. Le leader chevroné qu'il est (ayant gagné des medailles à tous les niveaux), il ne sait que trop bien que personne ne souviendra de cette année, s'il n'y a pas de succès post-saison. Avec ça en tête, et suite à la moins impressionnante des sorties de la formation en 2012 le weekend dernier, le but pour la semaine était de revenir à ce jeu fiable qui a rendu le program midget si efficace. Le déplacement à boucherville, qui trônait à la 4e place, donnait un parfait décor à ce défi. Et les Spartans ont encore repondu présents. Une victoire confortable, sans être arrogante, a montrée que les joueurs pouvaient se remobiliser et reprendre le bus en marche. Offensivement, la performance peut etre décrit comme étant présice et controllée. Un jeu de passe qui est un mélange dosé entre de courtes passes au WR Peter Skoulos et d'invicisives longue connection avec l'infatiguable Michael Remy (1 TD). Le QB Adam Sinigra marquera lui-même sur une courte course et une pair de FG pour compléter le score. La defense, qui avait été mal-menée la semaine passée par North Shore, a tenu solidement ne concedant qu'un score et prouvera sa détermination en se permettant le luxe de conclure le match en arretant les Grizzlis sur la ligne des buts, alors que la partie était déjà gagnée. Se type de volontarisme sera nécessaire pour les playoffs qui débuterons à St-Laurent le weekend du 26 Oct. Le staff semble avoir les mots justes pour remotiver les torupes. Le prochain match aura lieur vendredi prochain à St-Laurent (8.00pm) avec la venue de St-Lazare ,l'équipe de queue de tableau. une victoire assurera les Spartans du titre de saison réguliere et de l'avantage d'accueuilir les matches de post-saison. DESTINATION SET The QBFL second division playoffs format is an interesting one, as it is the one division of the three at bantam level that allows to participate in any one of three AAA playoffs tournament. The loss this weekend to St-Bruno just about sealed the fate of the St-Laurent program, which will now be competing for the QBFL cup. A 5-team postseason championship, with the final being played on championship weekend at St-Leonard. A win was imperative in order to keep any chance of staying in course for the President's Cup berth, but too many mistakes early in the game prevented the bantam Spartans to be competitive at anytime during the contest. Offensively, the Spartans appeared to be threatening late in the second, with a long score by Sheldon Coppin and a TD pass from QB Dennis Karabatsos to WR Alvin Avendano. But the damage had already been done, and St-Laurent will now focus in trying to get home field advantage by beating the last-place Sherbrooke Bulldogs who are visiting t-Laurent Park Friday night at 8.00pm. DESTINATION FIXÉE Les possibilités de playoffs pour les  équipes évoluants dans la deuxieme division de la QBFL sont interessantes car c'est dans cette division uniquement que, selon son classement final, une formation peut terminer dans l'un des trois tournois AAA . La défaite de St-Laurent face à St-Bruno le weekend dernier a scellé le destin des Spartans, qui maintenant savent qu'il disputeront la coupe QBFL, dont le titre se joue à St-Leonard lors du grand weekend des finales. Une victoire était impérative pour garder une chance de rester dans la course aux places pour la coupe du président. Mais de trop nombreuses erreurs tôt dans le match empecherent St-Laurent d'être dans le match. Offensivement, les Spartans ont semblé mettre un peu de pression avec deux scores en fin de deuxieme quart (un long TD de Sheldon Coppin et une passe du QB Dennis Karabatsos au WR Alvin Avendano. SWEPT AWAY AT WESTWOOD All three youth division St-Laurent teams came home empty from their Thanksgiving trip to Westwood Park in St-Lazare. If both atom and peewee programs had a tall order, as they played teams higher in the standings, the mosquito program on the other hand was playing the team they battle in the standings for second spot. A second place finish earns home field in the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Spartans could not keep pace with the Stallions running game and fell to an early deficit they could never gap. The killer blow coming when the Orange & Blacks scored late in the second on a run by QB Tristan Pelletier to narrow the deficit, only to  gave up a TD on the kickoff return. This was the sign that it wasn't meant to be on that day.  For the peewee, it was the same old story, as they took the lead early with two quick 1st half TD by Latrell Pierre and Anthony Moustache.  But the defense could not the advantage very long and was overmatched for most of the second half.  The Atom suffered a rare shutout against the Silver Stallions. They travelled with the regulation minimum of 12 players, which made it hard to keep up physically with a well prepared team. Next weekend, Western is visiting St-Laurent Park on Saturday at 5.00pm for the Peewee and on Sunday at 11.00am and 1.30pm for the Atom and Mosquito respectively.

BALAYÉS A WESTWOOD Les trois équipes des divisions jeunes des Spartans sont rentrés les mains vides de leur periple au parc Wetwood de St-Lazare. Si la nouvelle n'est pas necessairement surprenante pour les atomes et peewee qui jouaient des équipes placées plus au classement, le programme moustique en revanche se confrontait à l'équipe avec laquelle elle se dispute la 2e place au classement. Cette 2e position est cruciale car elle permet de jouer son premier tour des playoffs à domicile. Malheureusement, les spartans se sont mis dans une position délicate d'entrée et ne purent jamais plus garder le cadence des Stallions. la moment le plus difficile venant quand les orange-et-noirs marquerent par l'intermédiaire d'une course du QB Tristan Pelletier, malheureusement pour laisser filer un TD dans l'autre sens sur le botté de remise en jeu. C'était le signe clair que ce n'était pas leur jour. Pour les peewee, l'histoire se répète de semaine en semaine, alors qu'ils prennent la tête en début de match grâce à deux TD de L'atrell Pierre et d'Anthony Moustache. Mais la défense n'était pas en position de profiter de l'avantage et s'est vite retrouvée dans une situation où elle fut totallement dominée. Le program atome à  été victime d'un rare blanchissage. Seul le minimum règlementaire de 12 joueurs avaient fait le déplacement, ce qui rendait la mission presque impossible physiquement face à une équipe aussi bien préparée. Le weekend prochain, Les Patriots visit le parc St-Laurent, Ce sera Samedi à 5.00opm pour les peewees et dimanche à11.00am et 1.30pm pour les atomes et moustiques respectivement.

 NORTH SHORE Jr LIONS 

BUILDING BLOCKS Rome wasn't not built in one day, and neither are the St-Laurent Spartans. Even after almost 60 years of existence, the association still needs time to develop a program. This season the Tyke program were launch in a formal way, and this past weekend, the benefits clearly started to show. The youngest Spartans, coached on the field by Midget players Ossirus Ip, Harrison Rahajason and Mosquito player Jahlyd Little were taking part in a Tyke contest with the Western Patriots and the North Shore Jr. Lions. Though clearly the smallest team in numbers and the least experienced, the players showed a lot of character and clearly held their own in a competitive environment. Though scores are not kept and no standings are established, it can be noted that St-Laurent was even more at ease this weekend than previous one and dominated some portions of the contests. All players (aged 4-7) had a chance to participate in both offensive and defensive portion of the game and were a tribute to the colours they were wearing for their performance and their enthusiasm. And more importantly they all seemed to have a lot of fun playing football.

PAS A PAS Rome ne fut pas batit en un jour, et les Spartans non plus. Même après presque 60 ans d'existence, l'association à toujours de besoin de temps pour developper certains projets. Cette saison, le programme titan a été lancé formellement et le weekend passé les premiers fruits semblent murir. Les tout-petits Spartans, entrainés sur le terrain par les joueurs midget Ossirus Ip et Harrison Rahajason ainsi que du joueur moustique Jahlyd Little, prenaient part à un match triangulaire les opposant à Western et North Shore. Même si l'équipe était clairement la plus petite en nombre et la moins experimentée, les joueurs ont su se montrer combatifs dans un environment compétitif. Bien que les scores ne soient pas tenu et qu'il n\y ait pas d'etablissement de classement , il était clair que St-Laurent etait bienplus à son aise ce weekend que le précédent et que l'équipe domina certaines parties des débats. Les joueurs (agés de 4-7 ans) ont tous eu la chance de participer à la portion offensive et défensive du jeu et ont fait honneur à leurs couleurs, tant pour la performance que l'entousiasme.  Mais plus important encore, ils se sont tous amusés à jouer au football.

BARELY PERFECT There is an unmistakable sign that the World of midget football has turned around from the pre-established order that prevailed for years now. In a game played between the storied-club North Shore Mustangs and  the host Spartans, the guests from the West-Island came in as the challengers, while St-Laurent was the undisputed leader of the QMFL. Furthermore, the visitors were defeated and yet the home team seemed the most visibly upset of the two teams at the end of the contest. The Orange-and-Blacks, so smooth since the beginning of league play, were trying with to win in order to continue their perfect season, as well as gain a third straight victory over the Mustangs (dating back to last season), and guaranteeing themselves to finish above North Shore in 2012. Mission Accomplished... barely! The final score, 36-30, does not reflect how uncharacteristically poor some of the execution was, or how sloppily they almost let the game slip away at the very end. On the last play of the game, with the clock showing no time left, a last gasp pass by North Shore came within a hair of being caught in the St-Laurent endzone. This would have tied up the game with the extra-point to be kicked and no possibility for reply for the home team. The home team started brightly, though, taking a 10-0 lead on the strength of a field goal and a pick-6 by LB Umar Temoor. But the Mustangs regrouped and replied blow for blow, even taking the lead at some point in the second half. This was the first time the Spartans were trailing all season. This was also the first time St-Laurent's Orange Crush defense allowed more than 14 points this year.  At the end, even QB Adam Sinagra's poorest outing of the year was good enough to notch up the win, with the help of WR Michael Remy, who came back from is short stint at the hospital last week. RB Willy Insixiengmay continued his hot streak and score yet again on a short run. The win just about clinch a home game at St-Laurent Park for the postseason, another victory next weekend against the 5-2 Boucherville Grizzlis will make it official. QB Sneak Adam Sinigra

A PEINE PARFAIT Ils y des signes qui ne trompent pas. Le petit monde du football midget s'est inversé à 100% de l'ordre pré-établie qui regnait depuis des années. Dans un match qui opposait North Shore, l'un des géants de la ligue, et les hôtes de St-Laurent, ce sont les Spartans qui étaient les grands favoris, en tant que leader inconstestés de la QMFL. De plus, malgrès le score, se sont les Spartans qui semblaient les visiblement les plus agacés des deux équipes après le match. Les Orange-et-Noir, si sûr d'eux-même  depuis le début de l'année, essayaient d'obtenir une victoire pour maintenir leur saison parfaite, en plus d'infliger une troisième défaite de suite aux Mustangs (incluant la saison passée) et de se guarantir de finir devant North Shore ai classement 2012. Mission accomplie... à peine! Le score final, 36-30, ne reflète pas la pauvreté peu caractéristique de l'execution du jeu de St-Laurent, ou encore comment ils laissèrent leurs adversaires leur voler le résultat dans le derniers moments du match. En effet, sur le dernier jeu de la rencontre, avec la montre déjà à 00.00, une passe desespérée des Mustangs dans la zone des buts de St-Laurent fut manquée par North Shore d'un cheveu. Cela aurait permis au visiteur d'égaliser avec la transformation à venir et aucune chance pour les Spartans de répondre. Cette fin à suspens est à contre-temps de la bonne entame de partie pour St-Laurent, qui démarra avec une avance de 10-0 tôt dans le match. Cette avance fut obtenu notament sur le TD marqué suite à une interception du LB Umar Temoor. Mais les Mustangs, loin de se décourager, se sont regroupés et ont rendus coup-pour-coup prenant même l'avantage dans le courrant du 3e quart. e fut la première fois cette saison que les Spartans étaient menés à la marque. La première fois aussi que la defense de fer concéda plus de 14 points dans une rencontre en 2012.   A la fin, même la performance à demi-teinte du QB Adam Sinagra sera suffisante pour la victoire. Il fut aidé dans son effort par le WR Michael Remy, de retour de son bref séjour à l'hôpital ainsi que de l'inévitable RB Willy Insixiengmay  qui continue sa série et marquera encore sur une belle course. Le succès de la semaine, garantie quasiment que le parc St-Laurent soit le théatre d'au moins un match de playoffs. A GOOD SHOWING AGAINST A STRONG TEAM The bantam teams was coming into the week after receiving the encourageing news that two veterans were rejoining the ranks. Both Brandon Dass and Brandon Doret, who have been with the association since mosquito, are back from injury and on the roster for the end of the season. Unfortunately, their return did not yet pay off, as the Spartans lost another good fight against one the leader of the division, the Aigles in Varrennes.  The loss (37-13) takes them to a 2-5 records. They will be hosting a Friday night game in St-Laurent against the 4-3 St-Bruno Barons, which they disposed of easily in preseason play. In other QBFL note, the Joliette Pirates won a stunner, beating neighbours and rivals Laurentian Bobcats 20-14 for their first win of the year.

UNE BONNE TENUE FACE A UN DES FAVORIS Les bantams ont débuté leur semaine sur la nouvelle encourageante que deux de ses joueurs expérimentés reprenaient du service. Brandon Dass et Brandon Doret, qui sont dans l'association depuis la catégorie moustique, reviennent tous les deux de blessure et ont été incorporés dans l'alignement pour la fin de saison. Malheureusement, leur retour n'a pas encore porté ses fruits, et les Spartans se sont encore inclinés après avoir livré une bonne bataille face à l'une des grosses équipe de la division, les Aigles à Varennes. La défaite (37-13) est la 5e en sept sorties. St-Laurent sera l'hôte de St-Bruno ce vendredi soir, une formation que l'équipe avait battu en présaison. Ailleurs dans la QBFL, Joliette ramene le résultat surprise du weekend, en remportant le match face à leur voisin et rivaux de Laurentian 20-14 pour leur premiere victoire de la saison.

 ILE BIZARD VIKINGS   -     ST-LAURENT SPARTANS

BROTHERHOOD The Littlest Spartans were out to Ile Bizard to play the Vikings in Tykes action. The division plays non competitive mini-football to introduce the game to 4-7 year old.  Though the hosts were physically far bigger than the St-Laurent team, the play was balanced for most of the game. No score is kept, but St-Laurent was still able to reach the opponents endzone a couple of times. Coaches are allowed on the field at all times to help setup plays. Current midget player Harrison Rahajason (who is also a member of the peewee staff) and Mosquito player Jahlyd Dammier Little work as coaches to great success. Dammier Little came to the game to encourage his younger brother, and ended up taking responsibility for directing play. The team is the next generation of Spartans two other players have brothers in the midget program while one is son to a head coach. Next weekend, the team has accepted an invitation at Alexander Park.

CONFRERIE Les tout-petits Spartans étaient de sortie à l'Ile Bizard pour y jouer les Vikings dans match catégorie titan. La division est non compétitive, où un match de mini-football est joué pour 4-7ans. Bien que la formation hôte ait été bien plus robuste que celle de St-Laurent, le jeu est resté plutôt équilibré.  Les matches se jouent  sans que le score ne soit gardé, mais St-Laurent a reussi tout de même à atteindre la zone des buts adverses à une paire de reprises. Les entraineurs restent sur le terrain en tout temps pour preparer les jeux. Ce sont les joueurs Harrison Rahajason qui évolue avec les midget et fait partie du staff peewee accompagné de Jahlyd Dammier Little qui se sont mis à la tache avec un grand succès. Dammier Little était simplement venu encourager son jeune frère et a fini comme dirigeant du jeu. L'équipe est vraiment la prochaine génération pour les Spartans, avec deux des joueurs qui sont les jeunes frêres de membres des midgets et un autre qui est le fils d'un entraineur. La semaine prochaine, l'équipe a accepté une invitation à Alexander Park.
