RAREFIED AIR  The much anticipated game between the two undefeated teams in the QMFL which could not go on on Friday night because of the brutal weather that included heavy rain and lightning, was played at St-Laurent on Monday night. The home crowd that filled out the stands for the second act of the drama was treated to a gem, as both teams showed why they were the top of the midget league coming into the game. Both lineups oozed talent on either side of the ball, and it took a great defensive play by veteran DB Tristan Castonguay to break the deadlock with an interception returned for a TD, his first of the year. This score appeared to bring the Spartans a great deal of  momentum which allowed them to keep the lead the rest of the 60 minutes, notably thanks to a great connection on a long pass by QB Adam Sinigra to WR Michael Remy. The 14 points conceded are the most allowed in a game so far this year by the St-Laurent unrelenting defense, who actually was responsible for only half of them, as Lasalle second TD was scored on a intercepted pass against the offense. Tristan Castonguay's Pick-6 The Orange and Blacks are the now standing as the only undefeated team in the top division of the QMFL. A feat that appeared all but impossible to imagine just a few seasons ago, when the formerly formidable program had to be resurrected from its dormant state by one of St-Laurent's all-time great head coach Allan Williams. The team was brought back to life in 2003, stayed close to bottom of the second division for a few years, and only took itself up to the Bill Allen division after arduous 8 seasons. Coach James Buteau, in one and a half season, was able to take the elder Spartans the rest of the way to  the Everest of Quebec's prep football.  Williams, now a member of the Warriors staff, had the chance to personally congratulate his successor during the traditional end-of-game handshake, symbolically completing the cycle. The leaders will only have 4 days of rest before being back at work against another traditional QMFL powerhouse. They travel to the 2010 Provincial champions St-Leonard Cougars on Friday night to take on the Cougars at Hebert park.

NICHÉS SEULS AU SOMMET La bataille attendue de tous dans le monde du football amateur entre les deux formations invaincus de la QMFL et qui fut interrompue vendredi soir sous le coup d'impitoyables intempéries, fut finallement rejouée lundi soir à St-Laurent. Le public, revenu en nombre pour le deuxième acte du drame sportif, a eu droit à un spectacle de haute qualité, où les deux formations ont démontré pourquoi elles se disputaient le titre honorifique de leader de la QMFL. Les deux alignements débordants de talent de chaque côté du ballon, il faudra attendre un fantastique jeu défensif du DB Tristan Castonguay pour permettre aux Spartans de prendre l'initiative des débats, en marquant sur une interception ses premiers points de l'année. Le momentum créé par cet élan ne quittera plus les locaux le reste des 60 minutes. L'écart sera creusé et conservé, notament grâce à une superbe connection entre le  QB Adam Sinigra et le WR Michael Remy en fin de 2e quart. Les 14 points concédés representent le plus gros total alloué par l'intraitable defense des Spartans, qui ne fut d'ailleur responsable que de la moitié du total, l'autre étant à la décharge de l'attaque qui concéda 7 points sur une interception de Lasalle.  QB Sinagra & WR Remy Les Orange-et-Noirs sont maintenant seuls au sommet dans la QMFL, une situation inimaginable il y a seulement quelques saisons.  Le programme, qui fut ramené à la vie en 2003 par le légendaire coach Allan Williams, après des années d'inactivité, est resté longtemps proche du fond du classement de la 2e division avant de remonter dans la division suprérieure après 8 saisons. De là, coach James Buteau, en un an et demi, a reussi à hisser l'équipe au sommet de l'Everest du football civil dans la province. Williams, maintenant un membre du staff des Warriors, a eu la l'occasion de féliciter personellement son successeur lors de la poigné de main traditionnelle d'après-match, refermant symboliquement ainsi le cercle.  Les leaders ne bénéficient que de quatres jours de repos avant de se remettre à l'oeuvre. Ils feront le court voyage vers l'est pour faire face aux Cougars, les champions provinciaux 2010, vendredi soir au parc Hébert à St-Léonard.

A STEP TOO HIGH Over the weekend, head coach Barry Castello's team made their way to a team located way South on the map but way North in the standings. The bantam team crossed the river to play league leaders St-Hubert Rebelles and gaged its real distance to the top. Unfortunately, it proved a step too high for the Spartans. The Rebelles showed their class and won the contest 35-0.  The St-Laurent put up a good fight though, and was only down by a score at the half, before succumbing to taller and more physical opponents. The Bantam program will not have it any easier next weekend as they travel to Chateauguay, to play the 5-1 Raiders. The game originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, is now being played at 11.00am at Laberge Park.

UNE MARCHE TROP HAUTE Lors du dernier weekend la formation de l'entraineur Barry Castello a fait le difficile déplacement à St-Hubert, une équipe située bien au sud géographiquement, mais bien au nord dans le classement. Les bantam affrontaient les leaders de la division et par là ont eu une opportunité d'évaluer le chemin à parcourir vers les sommets. Malheureusement, la marche était trop haute et les Rebelles ont montré leur classe prenant la partie sur un score 35-0. St-Laurent a pourtant bien défendu sa cause, et n'accusait d'un retard de 7-0 à la mi-temps. Mais leurs adversaires plus grands et physiques ont imposé leur jeu en fin de match. L'équipe n'aura pas la tâche plus simple la semaine prochaine, alors qu'elle se déplace à Chateauguay pour y affronter des Raiders en pleine forme (5-1). La rencontre, ce samedi, originallement programmée à 1.00pm a été avancée à 11.00am.

ONE WEEDING AND TWO FUNERALS The mosquito team resumed its winning ways. An impressive shutout win over last place I-B Vikings (44-0) behind the efforts of Tristan Pelletier and Michael Ankamkah (2 TD each).  Both Atom and Peewee had a lot of hopes over this weekend and were disappointed in heartbreaking fashion.  The Younger Spartans lost to the Lakeshore Panthers with only 12 seconds to go on a Hail Mary pass caught by WR Louis Vincent. Justin Pace had put St-Laurent in the lead earlier in the game.  The peewee kept the game within a score until the closing second of the game. But the devastating news for the program is the loss of all-star FB Olivier Poitras to a severe knew injury on the last play of the second quarter, as he was running to tie up the contest. Olivier had scored earlier in the game along with TB Anthony Moustache.

UN MARRIAGE ET DEUX FUNERAILLES Les moustiques ont repris le chemin de la victoire. Les Spartans ont donné une impressionante performance (44-0) face à Ile-Bizard, derrière les efforts de Tristan Pelletier et Michael Ankamkah (2 TD chacun).   Les atomes et les peewees, eux qui avaient fondés de gros espoirs sur les matches du weekend sont rentrés déçus par leur défaites et la cruauté du déroulement des scénarios.  Les plus jeunes Spartans menaient leur confrontation jusqu'à 12 secondes de la fin. Lakeshore n'a inscrit ses derniers points que sur une passe de la denière chance attrapée par leur WR Louis Vincent. Justin Pace avait permis à St-Laurent de prendre les devants en début de rencontre.  Les peewee restèrent dans leur match jusqu'aux derniers instants de la  partie mais ne purent refaire leur retard. Malheureusement, la nouvelle la plus difficile de la journée fut la perte du FB Olivier Poitras (WMFL All-Star 2012) sur une blessure grave au genou lors du dernier jeu du 2e quart, alors qu'il filait tout droit vers la zone des buts. Olivier et le FB Anthony Moustache avait inscrit un TD chacun pour St-Laurent.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Head Coach Barry Castello circled this game against the Western Patriots as a must-win against a team that would compete for the same spots in the final standings. The players delivered a convincing 34-17 decision. Just 6 days after being rudely manhandled by the Bobcats, the Spartans showed they could also play football and they did it in a hurry.  Sheldon Coppin returned a punt for a TD before the offence even got the ball. On the fourth play from scrimmage, the veteran ball carrier ran the length of the field and gave a 7-0 lead to the Orange and Blacks they would never surrender. Coppin is certainly the man of the match, scoring a total of three TD's and contributing on defense as well. The St-Laurent team (2-2) will be traveling next Saturday evening to visit a St-Hubert team that was still undefeated entering this weekend round of play.

MISSION ACCOMPLIE Comme les deux équipes seront sans doute en competition pour les mêmes postitions dans le classement final, Barry Castello, l'entraineur du programme bantam,  avait encerlé cette rencontre contre Western comme un match clef pour l'avenir de la saison.  Les joueurs n'ont pas déçu et ont ramené une convainquante victoire 34-17. Seulement 6 jours après s'être fait sévèrement corrigés face au Bobcats, les Spartans ont montré qu'eux aussi pouvaient jouer, et ils l'ont démontré très vite. Sheldon Coppin a ouvert le score en retournant un dégagement avant même que son unité offensive ne touche la balle. Lors du 4e jeux du match, le vétéran de 5 saisons retourna le botté sur la longueur du terrain et donnera aux Spartans un avantage de 7-0 qu'ils ne lacheront jamais. Coppin, qui a marqué à trois reprises  accompagné d'une solide performance défensive, peut surement être désigné le joueur du match. St-Laurent (2-2), se déplacera samedi prochain à St-Hubert pour y rencontrer une équipe qui n'avait pas encore perdu le moindre match à l'entrer du weekend.

Nice cheer for the Dragons, not enough to beat the Spartans

WINNING IN THE RAIN Neither the 4-hour journey, nor some of the torential rain or even the hickups experienced on the first series of the game, prevented the superioty of the Spartans team to show in a game that was close for only 5 minutes on the clock.  The host, the Beauce Dragons, came out all guns blazzing, pushed by a large partisan crowd and a full cheerleading squad. The were able to stop the 1st Spartans drive on their own 25 with an impressive stand. They drove the ball the other way on 8 plays and took the early lead on a FG. This appeared to have wakening effect on the Orange & Blacks, who only took two plays to take a lead that only got more commanding as the game wore on. The inevitable RB Willy Insixiengmay ran through the Dragons' defense for a 95 yards score that electrified the three dozen brave away fans who had traveled from Montreal. The TD was the first of five major scores,  that were helped by the strong leadership of its starting QB Adam Sinagra and the very dependable backup Dylan Seinet. The defense, the stingiest in the league, also got on the board with two safeties while the Special Teams accounted for three Rouges to make the final score an impressive 41-6. RB Willy Insixiengmay TD The win puts HC James Buteau's boys in sole possession of first place in the QMFL top division (4-0). A heights not reached since the early 1980's. It sets up a much anticipated clash with second place Lasalle Warriors next Friday at St-Laurent Park.

TRIOMPHE SOUS LA PLUIE I.N.A.R.R.E.T.A.B.L.E! Rien ni personne ne semblait être en mesure de stopper la progression des Spartans ce weekend. Ni l'interminable voyage vers St-Georges, ni la pluie torrentielle qui parsema la rencontre, ni même la fébrile performance dans l'entame de match. Le suspense ne dura que 5 minutes. Les Dragons commencèrent la rencontre en sortant tous leurs atouts d'entrée. Soutenu par leurs cheerleaders et un parterre bien rempli, les locaux reussir à contenir St-Laurent à leur première possession et à conduire la balle dans l'autre direction pour ouvrir le score de la partie avec un FG. Cette série sembla avoir un effet de coup de fouet pour les Orange et Noir, qui reprirent l'initiative des débats immédiatement et inéxorablement jusqu'à la fin du match. C'est l'inévitable RB Willy Insixiengmay qui remit les pendules à l'heure deux jeux plus tard, en ramenant la balle 95 Yds à travers la defense de Beauce, electrifiant du même coup la trentaines de fans ayant fait le déplacement de Montréal. Quatres autres scores majeurs seront inscrits derrière le leadership du QB partant Adam Sinagra et son très fiable suppléant Dylan Seinet. La défense, la plus avare en points concédés dans la QMFL et les unités speciales ont aussi contribué au total des points (deux S et trois rouges) pour une impressionnante marque finale de 41-6. Sous les trombes, l'intraitable Orange Crush (QB sack) La victoire met les garçons de l'entraineur James Buteau seuls au sommet de la 1e division de la ligue (4-0) pour la première fois depuis plus de trente ans. Le duel face aux Warriors, les seconds au classement, la semaine prochaine à St-Laurent sera d'autant plus attendu.

SWEPT AWAY! The opening home weekend two weeks ago yielded a perfect record for the Spartans youth teams as each team took care of the Stallions in style. The second home program was not so good. All three St-Laurent came lost their respective encounters against The Lakeshore Cougars. Both Mosquito and Atom programs boasted good defensive numbers, but were both taken down by physically strong teams. The youngest Spartans, lost a 38-0 decision, which represented the first time they got shutout of the season. The Mosquito teams was uncharacteristically out of synch, and could not contain the imposing Lakeshore offense which took a 53-6 victory back to Kirkland. The lone score for the Orange and Black came on the back of a pass to TE  Michael  Ankamkah. The Peewee team lost a much tighter decision, losing 16-8 on a last minute TD run by Cougars All-Star QB Alexander Stathis. The Spartans took the lead late in the second quarter on a pass by QB Chris Karabatsos to TE Olivier Poitras, both of them also members of the WMFL All-Star team. Lakeshore retain possession of the ball 66% of the time in the second half on long drive that killed the clock preventing the Spartans to put their offensive team on the field to mount any kind of challenge. Next games for teams are at St-Laurent Park  this coming Sunday. Kickoff for the Atom is at 11.00am, Mosquito at 12.30pm and Peewee at 2.30pm (Canteen in service). QB sack by #71 Nabil Njoukouyou

JEU BLANC Le weekend d'ouverture à domicile il y a deux semaines a rendu un verdict parfait où les trois équipes des divisions jeunes des Spartans l'ont emporté face au Stallions de façon plutôt décisive. La deuxième serie de match n'a pas été aussi glorieuse. Les trois équipes ont connu la défaite face à Lakeshore. Les moustiques et atomes, qui pourtant entraient dans leur partie respective avec de solides chiffres défensifs, se sont fait cueillir à froid par des formations physiquement forte. Les plus jeunes des Spartans ont concédé un revers sur un score de 38-0. C'est la première fois de la saison que l'attaque de l'équipe garde son compteur offensif à zéro. Les moustiques, eux aussi performant en dessous de leur habitude, n'ont pas resisté aux Cougars et ont subit une lourde défaite 53-6. Les points de St-Laurent ont été inscrit sur une passe au TE Michael  Ankamkah. Les peewees, quant à eux, ont été défaits sur une décision bien plus sérrée de 16-8. Le match à basculé en faveur de Lakeshore quand son QB Alexander Stathis, membre de la séléction ELITE de la WMFL, marqua sur une longue course avec une minute à jouer. Les Spartans avait pourtant mené jusqu'au 3e quart, grace à un TD sur une passe du QB Chris Karabatsos au TE Olivier Poitras, tous deux aussi membres de la sélection ELITE. Lakeshore, intelligement, garda la balle 66% du temps en 2e partie de match, ne laissant ainsi pas l'opportunité pour St-Laurent de mettre son équipe offensive sur le terrain et de tenter de revenir au score. Tous les prochains matches auront lieu à parc St-Laurent ce dimanche. Coup d'envoi atom à 11.00am,  moustique à 12.30pm et peewee à 2.30pm (Cantine en service).

LABOURING TO THE TOP The St-Laurent Midget program has reached heights it hadn't in decades. After three Games, the team remains perfect after a convincing 24-8 win against the early season league leader and old-time rival Sun Youth, coached by legendary Earl De La Peralle. The Spartans (3-0) made a strong statement to the league as to its contender's credentials, but especially as of the quality of its defensive play. Having faced three reputed offensive units in 2012, the Orange & Blacks have allowed only 7 points a game while racking up the sack total. LB Umar Temoor has been the anchor or the squad. Offensively, the team relied on the solid play by QB Adam Sinagra (2 TD) and the ever present RB Willy Insixiengmay (1 TD run) to score their 24 points against a defense that had only conceded 8 in two games so far this season. St-Laurent will make the long trip to St-Georges next weekend to play the Beauce Dragons.

DUR TRAVAIL VERS LES SOMMETS Le programme midget de St-Laurent a atteint des sommets qu'ils ne connaissaient plus depuis des décennies. Après 3 matches et une éclatante victoire sur Sun Youth du légendaire coach Earl De La Peralle, l'équipe reste invaincue. Les Spartans (3-0) ont, de ce fait, passer le message à toute la ligue qu'ils sont prêts à assumer le rôle de leader. Ils ont également clairement communiqué sur la qualité de l'unité defensive. Après 3 semaines et face à des équipes de solides réputations offensives, les Oranges et Noirs n'ont concédé que 7 points par rencontre tout en faisant exploser le nombre de Sacks. Le travail du LB Umar Temoor à ce chapitre est particulièrement éloquant. De l'autre côté du ballon, l'équipe a pu compter sur la solide performance du QB Adam Sinagra (2 TD) et de l'inévitable Willy Insixiengmay (1 TD sur course) pour marquer 24 points à une défense qui n'en avait concédée que 8 auparavant. St-Laurent fera le long trajet vers St-Georges-de-Beauce le weekend prochain, pour y rencontrer les dragons.

FORGETTABLE NIGHTS AT THE PARK  The Bantam team suffered its first home loss of the season by surrendering to a well organized Laurentian Bobcats teams on a 40-0 score. To make matter worse, QB Dennis Karabatsos had to leave the game late in the second half appearing to have hurt his wrist. The extent of the injury is yet to be confirmed. St-Laurent, now 1-2, will be hosting the 1-2-1 Western Patriots at the Park again on Friday night.

UNE SOIRÉE A OUBLIÉ AU PARC L'équipe bantam a été victime de sa première défaite à domicile en succombant aux mains des Bobcats, une équipe bien organisée qui fait la course en tête dans la QBFL. Pour ne rien arranger, l'équipe a perdu en fin de match son QB Dennis Karabatsos, qui dut quitter la rencontre ans le 4e quart sur blessure au poigné. L'étendu des dommages n'est pas encore confirmée. Les Spartans, maintenant avec une victoire en 3 matches, seront les hôtes des Western Patriots (1-2-1) ce vendredi soir au parc St-Laurent.

IMPRESSIVE MOSQUITOS, PEEWEE AND ATOM STILL A LITTLE SHORT The Peewee program lost again in a game it lead into the second half on a final score of 40-22 against Western. The team performs reasonably well on the offense (83 points scored), and only needs to tighten things on the other side of the ball to see its standing improve. The mosquitos are keeping  their early season form and can now be considered a true containder in the league with a 3-1 record. They squeezed past the Silver Patriots on a narrow score (24-22) thanks to another great performance from its defensive squad which has only allowed 58 points in 4 games so far in 2012. The Atom lost by less than a full score (18-13) against the Western Silver Patriots. The defending provincial champion, Ile Bizard Vikings are leading the pack with a perfect start after four games, but the rest of the pack is still close, and the good performances of the St-Laurent team allow for some optimism for the rest of the year and the post season.

DEBUT DE SAISON IMPRESSIONANTE POUR LES MOUSTIQUES, ENCORE UN PEU JUSTE POUR LES PEEWEE ET ATOM Le programme peewee a perdu un autre match alors qu'il menait en 2e mi-temps sur un score final de 40-22 face à Western. L'équipe connait un succès résonnable offensivement (83 pts marqués) et n'a besoin que de petits ajustements de l'autre côté de la balle pour voir son classement s'amélioré. Les moustiques continuent leur impréssionnante début de saison (3-1) et emerge comme de vrais prétendants dans la ligue. Ce weekend ils ont reussi à devancer les Silver Patriots à Pincourt sur la marque de 24-22 encore une fois sur une étonnante perfomance de la défense qui n'a laissé passer que 58 points en 4 matches en 2012. Les atomes, quant à eux, ne se sont inclinés que de 5 points face aux Silver Patriots. Dans ce championnat, si  Ile-Bizard, les champions provinciaux en titre, font la course seuls en tête, le reste des poursuivants sont assez proches et les bonnes performances de l'équipe de St-Laurent permet de rester optimiste pour le reste de la saison.
