ANOTHER PLAYOFFS SUNDAY  Emotionally, It was a Sunday of extremes. For the younger Spartans, all targets were reached. For the older, it is the end of the road. Four of the five St-Laurent teams were trying their luck in their respective playoffs series - the Atom program having received a bye into the 2nd round. The mosquitos, kept it business as usual and recorded their 11th win of the season with a usual large score (42-0) over the visiting Western Patriots. For HC Steve Batsos, it was a first playoffs victory at this level, as he was defeated at the same stage in last season’s campaign b the St-Lazare Stallions. He’ll be able to avenge the setback next week against those very same Stallions at the league championship game. However, if the mosquito score was somewhat expected, the peewee registered a stunning upset. The squad lead by HC Jimmy Skoulos managed to drop the heavily favourite for the league title Patriots. The Western peewee team dominated the regular season (8-1, 439 pts scored). St-Laurent rethought its game plan and was able to completely surprise its opponent and gain a memorable win 34-14 over a physically superior opponent. FB Keeshawn Giles scored four times and was named man of the match. In the next round, the Spartans will play Lakeshore for the league flag. Unfortunately, the success of the younger sections of the association could not be replicated by the older ones. The bantam, on a road game to Sherbrooke for the 1st round of the QBFL Cup, could not outplay the Bulldogs and conceded defeat to them for the third time in 2013. The midget team also could not sustain its effort for a full 60 minutes and met an early playoffs exit. The game was promising in the early going (18-6 lead at the half), but a comprehensive collapse in the second half saw the visiting St-Lazare Stallions score 42 unanswered points after the break.  For the graduating players it is time to shed tears on the long walk to the dressing room as it is the realization that it is the end of the road in an Orange-and-Black jersey. ::: Bantam ::: Western Bulldogs               21   St-Laurent Spartans           07  ::: Midget ::: St. Lazare Stallions            48   St-Laurent Spartans            16    ENTRE EUFORIE ET DESESPOIR… UN DIMANCHE DE PLAYOFFS  Ce fut un dimanche des extremes au niveau des émotions. Dans les plus jeunes sections des Spartans, c’est le carton plein, pour les plus vieux, c’est la fin de la route. Quatres des cinq équipes de St-Laurent s’essayaient ce weekend dans leur serie respective, alors que les atomes, eux de repos, passent directement au 2e tour. Les moustiques, grands habitués des gros scores, n’ont pas deçus et ont mis fin à la saison des Patriotes sur une marque finale sans appel de 42-0. Pour Steve Batsos, à ce niveau, c’est une premiere victoire en playoff en carriere, alors que l’an dernier il avait été defait au premier tour dans la même compétition par St-Lazare. Une équipe des Stallions à qui il pourra rendre la pareil alors qu’il  la retrouvera la semaine prochaine pour le match de championnat de ligue. Mais si le résultat du match moustique était attendu, en revanche, celui du match des peewee est un coup de tonnerre. L’équipe de Jimmy Skoulos a fait tomber les Patriotes qui étaient les grands favoris de la ligue, après leur survole de la saison régulière (8-1, 439 pts marqués). St-Laurent a repensé son jeu pour completement surprendre et déjouer sur un score net (34-14) un adversaire pourtant superieur physiquement. Le FB Keeshawn Giles a marqué à quatres reprises et a été nommé l’homme du match. Au deuxieme tour, St-Laurent affrontera Lakeshore pour la finale de ligue. Malheureusement, le succès des plus jeunes n’a pu être copié par les plus anciens. L’équipe bantam, en déplacement à Sherbrooke pour la 1er tour de la coupe QBFL, n’a pu se defaire du piège des Bulldogs, et concedent une 3e defaite face à cette équipe cette saison. Pour les midget aussi c’est la fin de la route, alors qu’un match très bien entammé (St-Laurent menait 18-6 à la mi-temps), se termine sur un effondrement en 2e moitié de match, avec au final une défaite amer sur le score de 42-18. C’est la fin du parcours en orange-et-noir pour les plus anciens, dont le retour au vestiaire se fait en larmes. La vie continuera pour eux sous d’autres cieux sportifs... Spartans’ road win earns split with Lakeshore

Payback was the order of the day for the St. Laurent Spartans who downed the Lakeshore Cougars 29-16 in Midget football Action Saturday at Benevoles Park in Kirkland.

“It was our biggest game of the season for playoffs and some unfinished business,” said Spartans head coach Jimmy Skoulos whose team was defeated by the Cougars earlier in the season. “I asked the team to play for two-halfs and that’s exactly what they gave me.”

Both teams seemed evenly matched in a scoreless first quarter of the evening match-up struggling for dominance of the gridiron. The Spartans only broke the impasse in the second quarter with a touchdown and point-after scored by Peter Skoulos giving his team the lead. The Spartans lead was short-lived as the Cougars roared back in the closing three minutes with a touchdown by Sean McGraff followed with a successful field goal by Gabriel Achard delivering a paltry 9-7 lead for the home team by halftime.

The Spartans charged into the third quarter of the game opening with a touchdown and point-after run into the end zone by Sheldon Coppin who returned a punt more than 70 yards. Just minutes later teammate Gerorge Karkaselos runs a second touchdown that was followed by a two-point convert by Kebante Holmes sealing the Spartans’ dominance of the Cougars’ den. According to Skoulos “we stopped most of their drives after halftime.”

The Cougars remained undaunted despite the growing void in score and visibly short-bench often with players playing on both offensive and defensive squads. In the closing minutes of the game the Cougars gave one last gasp on their home turf delivering a second touchdown and successful point after scored by Alex Vincent-Ouici that ended the game 29-16. Cougars head coach Iain Sims conceded, “it was a good game and their #14 [Coppin] really turned their game around.”
“The kids were getting tired,” said Sims about his short-benched team. “We still had drives at the end [of the game], but it has been a tough year that started with 30 on the roster now down to 22 because of injuries.”

In the very last day of the regular season 2013, all four formations in action for the weekend took home a victory in their respective game, and that only a week after being shutout. This is a great sign for the playoffs that are now about to begin. The mosquito team, that had a bye last week, and that was short a number of starter due to a conflict with high school entry exams, did not veer from their stellar trajectory and recorded their 10th win in as many tries. Lakeshore, the designated “victim-of-the-day”, did resist very long to the repeated assaults of the Black-and-Orange offence led by QB Tristan Pelletier (final score 34-6). The season’s performance represents coup for HC Steve Batsos and his staff which are just finishing their first season at the level. They were rewarded by WMFL president Martin Lemire at game’s end with a trophy representing the regular season championship. This deserved accolade is, no doubt, seen as only the first of three in this season that could be truly exceptional. A perfect record in the regular season is a great feat that needs to be acknowledged and celebrated in the life of an association. This is the 6th time since the turn of the millenium that a Spartan team put their names in this category: The 2005 bantam, 2010 and 2012 midget and the 2006 and 2011 mosquito reached that milestone. But the weekend which started with a trophy ended with a fireworks. The atom, bantam and midget were also able to top their opponent of the day, all of which were ahead in their respective standings. For the youngest Spartans lead by HC Steven Baranoff, it was a second win in three weeks (36-6 against Lakeshore). The team can now take advantage of a bye week before starting in the Alouettes Cup playoffs. For the bantam team, the win, which does not influence the final standings, had an enormous significance, as it was taken against Varennes, the in-form team in the division. The Aigles won the regular season flag somewhat comfortably and just last weekend scored 63 points past second -place Western. However, they couldn’t resist the persistent play of the St-Laurent players who scored the winner on the last possession of the match for a tight but deserved victory (28-24). This great morale booster for Barry Castello’s troops will have to be capitalized next weekend during a perilous trip to the Eastern Townships where the team will start defence of the QBFL Cup against a very dangerous Sherbrooke team. For the midget team, the calculations were very simple. A win against Lakeshore and the team would be out of the division’s basement for the first time this year. As a reward they would host round one of the Jack Simpson playoffs. A loss, on the other hand would condemn them to the last spot and a long and arduous trip to Victoriaville next weekend. The players heard the call and regrouped behind the leadership of coach Jimmy Skoulos, fought hard and came back from a half-time 7-9 deficit to a much anticipated win 26-19. With it for the veterans of the program, a another chance to play a home game at St-Laurent Park. The 2013 regularly scheduled games are now over. En ce dernier jour de la saison régulière 2013, les quatres formations en action ce weekend ont toutes été vainqueurs de leur rencontre, et ce juste une semaine après avoir été blanchi le weekend précédent. Un bon signe pour les playoffs qui commencent la semaine prochaine. L’équipe moustique, qui pourtant comptait de nombreux absents du fait du conflit d’horaire avec les examens d’entrer au secondaire, n’a pas devié sa trajectoire stellaire et a enregistré sa 10e victoire en autant de sortie. Lakeshore, la victime du jour, n’a pas resisté longtemps aux assaults de l’offensive orange-et-noir, mené avec precision par le QB Tristan Pelletier (score final 34-6). C’est un coup de maitre Steve Batsos et son staff qui dès leur première saison au niveau moustique atteignent la perfection et qui dès la fin du match ont reçu des mains de Mertin Lemire, le président de la WMFL le trophée du championnat de saison régulière. Cette belle récompense, bien sûr, n’est vu que comme la première de trois d’une saison qui s’annonce comme vraiment exceptionnelle. Une saison parfaite reste un fait a souligner dans la vie d’une association et un exploit qui reste dans les annales. C’est la 6e fois depuis le nouveau millénaire qu’une equipe des Spartans s’y inscrit après l’équipe bantam en 2005, midget en 2010 et 2012 et moustique en 2006 et 2011. Mais ce weekend qui commença avec un trophée, s’est complété avec un feu d’artifice. Les équipes atome, bantam et midget ont aussi été victorieuse dans des matches qui les opposaient à des équipes mieux classées qu’elles. Pour les plus jeunes Spartans du coach Steven Baranoff, c’est une deuxieme victoire dans les trois derniers matchs, 36-6 face à Lakeshore. L’équipe maintenant profite d’une semaine de repos avant de s’attaquer aux playoffs de la coupe des Alouettes. Pour l’équipe Bantam, la victoire qui n’influence pas le classement mais a une enorme signification, car elle est remportée aux dépends de l’équipe en forme de la division, Varennes qui a remporté le championnat de saison. Les Aigles, qui ont passé 63 points à Western la semaine dernière, n’ont su resister aux Spartans qui remportent le match à la dernière possession du match sur un score serré mais largement mérité (28-24). Ce coup de pouce au morale des troupes de Barry Castello, il faudra le capitaliser la semaine prochaine, lors d’un déplacement périlleux dans les Cantons-de-L’est face à Sherbrooke pour le premier tour de la défense de la coupe de la QBFL. Pour les Midget, l’enjeu était simple: une victoire face à Lakeshore, et l’équipe quitterait la dernière place de la division et recevrait pour le premier tour du trophé Jack Simpson, ou une défaite et l’équipe, alors condamnée à la dernière place, serait obliger de voyager vers Victoriaville le weekend prochain. Les joueurs ont entendu l’appel et se sont regroupés derrière son coach Jimmy Skoulos, et ont ramené la victoire tant espérée toute la saison (26-19) et le droit de revenir au moins encore une fois au parc St-Laurent. Le calendrier régulier 2013 est maintenant terminée. The stakes were not so high as the games were not that determinant for playoffs positioning, but the performance will have to be a little better when the serious business start in a couple of weeks. Otherwise, they may end just as quickly.

The atom team, still basking in the glow of having been featured as the intermission show at the Montreal Alouettes game the previous week, was able to convert the feel-good vibes into a convincing victory. Steven Baranoff’s formation took an emphatic 20-0 decision against the St-Lazare Stallions. The shutout victory shows the team is peaking at the right time of the season, a couple of weeks before the postseason starts. The mosquito program continued on its ruthless streak and won a ninth win in a row 42-0 against the Western Patriots. The return to form of the defensive squad, a week after having conceded 22 points, bodes well more than ever for looming playoffs challenges. Steve Batsos’ troops will have to wait another two weeks to play their last regular season game, and know if they can join the Spartans Honour Roll by becoming only the sixth team to go perfect in the regular season since the millennium. Barry Castello’s bantam program won its fourth game running (36-19 against the Joliettes Pirates) and is now in a the midst of a four-way dog fight for the top 4 stops in the QBFL McNair division. The Spartans succes, along with the unexpected loss of Western against Sherbrooke blew the race wide-open. The Spartans can legitimately believe in its ability to snatch-up one of the first two places which will allowed them to pole-vault straight into the semis of the QBFL Cup. The pictures will become that much clearer after next week game when Sherbrooke will visit the St-Laurent Park for a decisive match whilst Western will host Varennes.

::: Bantam ::: Joliette Pirates              19   St-Laurent Spartans       36  ::: Midget ::: Lasalle Warriors             42   St-Laurent Spartans       00     WEEKEND GAGNANT POUR LES SPARTANS  Un bon weekend pour association de football de St-Laurent qui a remporté trois de ces 5 cinq rencontres. L’équipe atome, sur son nuage suite à son passage en entracte des Alouettes la semaine derniere, reussi a remporter son deuxieme succès de la saison de belle manière remportant la partie face à St-Lazare 20-0. Un blanchissage pour les troupes de Steven Baranoff qui montre que l’équipe arrive en forme au bon moment de la saison à la veille des playoffs. Les moustiques ont remporté leur neuvieme partie en autant de sortie. Tout comme leur plus jeunes camarades, ils infligé un blanchissage aux visiteurs (42-0 face à Western) et plus que jamais peuvent prétendre être parmi les prétendents aux honneurs provinciaux. Les troupes de Steve Batsos devront attendre maintenant deux semaines pour jouer leur dernier match de la saison régulière et savoir s’ils inscriront leur nom au tableau d’honneur des Spartans en devenant la 6e équipes de St-Laurent depuis 2000 à finir la saison régulière avec une fiche parfaite. L’équipe Bantam de Barry Castello, quant à elle, a remporté son 4e succès de suite (36-19 face à Joliette) et se trouve maintenant au beau milieu d’une excitante lutte à quatre, avec les Patriots, les aigles et les Bulldogs, pour les places d’honneur. En effet, du fait du revers inattendu de Western, toutes ces formations peuvent encore rêver de finir premier ou deuxième de la division McNair et ainsi accèder directement au demi-finale de la coupe QBFL. Cela se précisera grandement samedi prochain quand Sherbrooke visitera le parc St-Laurent alors que Western sera les hôtes de Varennes.
